Gaia River Lodge

Aptly named for the Greek goddess who’s no less than the personification of the Earth itself, Gaia River Lodge immerses you in the Belizean rain forest, and gives you a front-row view of the majestic Five Sisters Waterfalls in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. This immersion comes at some cost, if quick and effortless travel is a priority — but it’s worth the trouble, as this kind of eco-travel experience would be simply impossible in any less remote a location. It’s as serene an escape as you want it to be; the adults-only waterfall-view rooms and cabanas are the ones to get if you can, but there’s no place on the property that’s anything less than spectacular. The accommodations are traditional on the outside, with thatched roofs, the better to blend into their surroundings — inside, they’re contemporary-classic, rustic at heart but with just the right measure of luxe polish. There’s a spa, a lobby bar, and a treehouse-style restaurant; for the most part, however, the hotel’s public spaces are the rainforest itself. There’s a natural pool attached to the river, there’s an organic garden, and off-site there’s no end of things to see and do — from tours of the Maya archaeological site of Caracol to horseback tours, hikes, cave tubing, zip-lining, you name it. You’re right in the middle of Belize’s largest national park, and if ever there’s a place for a hotel named for the Earth itself, this is it.
