Phuket has more world-class hotels per square kilometre than almost any other resort destination on earth. The challenge is not finding a good hotel — it is understanding which of the island's very different experiences is right for you.
Understanding Phuket's Geography
Phuket is not a single destination — it is a collection of micro-worlds, each with its own character, clientele, and version of paradise. The west coast, which faces the Andaman Sea, is where almost all of the island's finest hotels are located. But within that coastline, the differences are significant.
Surin Beach, in the north, is the most exclusive: quieter, less developed, and home to Amanpuri and Trisara — two of the finest hotels in Asia. Kamala Beach, just south, offers a middle ground: still relatively quiet, but with more restaurants and amenities. Patong, the island's main resort town, is where the majority of visitors stay, and where the island's reputation for excess and noise originates. The finest hotels in Phuket are almost all north of Patong.
Amanpuri: Where It All Began
Amanpuri opened in 1988 as the first Aman resort, and it remains the most influential hotel in the history of Asian luxury travel. Adrian Zecha's founding vision — a collection of private pavilions set in a coconut palm plantation above a private beach, staffed by people who treated every guest as a personal guest rather than a customer — defined the template for the luxury resort experience that every subsequent hotel has tried to replicate.
The Amanpuri today is both a museum piece and a living hotel. The original pavilions, designed by Ed Tuttle in a style that blends Thai temple architecture with modernist minimalism, remain among the most beautiful hotel rooms in the world. The beach club, with its black-tiled pool and views over the Andaman Sea, is the most elegant in Phuket.

Keemala: The Treehouse Hotel
Keemala, which opened in 2016 in the hills above Kamala Beach, represents the opposite end of the Phuket luxury spectrum from Amanpuri. Where Amanpuri is restrained and architectural, Keemala is theatrical and immersive: a fantasy village of tented villas, bird's nest pods, and treehouse suites set in a tropical forest, connected by winding jungle paths.
The hotel's 38 pool villas are among the most distinctive hotel rooms in Asia. The Bird's Nest Pool Villas — suspended above the forest floor on stilts, with private infinity pools overlooking the jungle canopy — are the most photographed hotel rooms in Thailand.
Trisara: The Private Estate
Trisara occupies a private cove on the northwest coast of Phuket — a location so secluded that it feels less like a hotel and more like a private estate that happens to accommodate paying guests. The 39 pool villas and residences cascade down the hillside to the beach, each one oriented to maximise privacy and sea views.
The hotel's PRU restaurant — which grows much of its produce in its own farm and sources the rest from small Thai producers — was the first restaurant in Thailand to receive a Michelin star. For food-focused travellers, Trisara is the essential Phuket choice.
